Works everywhere

PC, Mac, iPhone, Android — just a modern browser. Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge.

Converting a PDF to PDF/A creates a version of the document compliant with the ISO standard for long-term archiving. The PDF/A format guarantees that the document is self-contained (fonts, colours and metadata embedded) and will remain readable in the future, regardless of the software available.

PDF/A is required by public bodies, digital archives, law firms and organisations that need to preserve documents for years or decades. OnlinePdfEditor produces PDF/A-1b files, the most common subset of the standard, compatible with most document management systems.

Conversion happens in the browser via pdf-lib, without transmitting the file to external servers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the PDF/A format?

PDF/A is an ISO standard (ISO 19005) for long-term archiving of electronic documents. It ensures the document can be read identically even decades from now, embedding all necessary elements (fonts, colors, metadata) in the file.

What is the difference between PDF/A-1, PDF/A-2 and PDF/A-3?

PDF/A-1 is the base standard (2005). PDF/A-2 (2011) adds JPEG2000 support and optional layers. PDF/A-3 (2012) allows attaching any file type. The tool generates PDF/A-2b, the most widely used profile.

Is the PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens entirely in the browser with pdf-lib. The file never leaves your device.

Can I use PDF/A for electronic invoices?

Yes. The PDF/A format is required by many electronic invoicing and document management systems (DMS) as an archiving standard.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

PDF/A does not support encryption. If the PDF is protected, you must first remove the password with /sbloccare-pdf.

Is the resulting file larger than the original?

Possibly yes, because fonts are embedded and metadata is added. The size increase is generally modest (5-15%).
